LAST WARNING FOR SCULLY AND MULDER ROMANCE SITUATION!!!!! Fear of Losing You After that case of the 'fat-sucking' man, Agent Mulder and Agent Scully got assigned to a case that was different from all the others they had had. This time everyone knew that something was going on with the person they were looking for. The X-File on Jack Connors showed that the man had been able to disappear from a room full of people when everyone was watching. Something that sounded like David Copperfield except that this had been witnessed by more than twenty people and there were no tricks to it. It had happened when the man had been sentenced to death for manslaughter and was about to be fried on an electric chair. Suddenly the light in the room had started flickering and the image of the man sitting in the chair had strangely followed that pattern too. In one moment he was there and the second after he was gone. People witnessed this for about five minutes before realizing that the man had really disappeared. Scully was going through the file in the car while they were driving to the federal jail to take a look at the death chamber. "It seems incredible that everyone witnessed the same thing." Scully said aloud. "Annoyed by the fact that there are too many witnesses saying that my theories are not crazy in this case?" Mulder joked steering the wheel to a secondary street. Scully lifted her head and turned to look at him. "Doesn't it concern you the fact that all those people described the scene the same way?" Scully asked then. "Why? They probably saw it the same way." "No, that's not what I mean. Here in these reports the people almost seem to use the same words and they describe the event so accurately . . . you know that no two people can describe the same event the same way, it's proven scientifically." "There you go again Scully, 'scientifically' is the magic word of the day. These people weren't witnessing the fission of the atom. They saw a man disappear from an electric chair." She made a face and turned to look at the street leading to the federal prison. The landscape was eerie, no life in miles and miles. The desert was the biggest protection these people had and they were sure anyone would be discouraged to try an escape. She looked at Mulder driving patiently through that awful landscape and noticed his excitement. This case his chance to redeem himself. It was mean of her to try to show how wrong things seemed to be. She settled back in the chair and rested her red head on the support before closing her eyes. "Tired, Scully?" Mulder asked. It had been only a few weeks that he finally recovered from his psychological trauma of being under the influence of another mind and after that all the cases seemed to just plop on their desk. She knew very well he tried hard to keep himself busy so that he wouldn't think back to that stupid incident with Modell. But things had to change, he couldn't just close himself in because he was afraid to be vulnerable. Vulnerable . . . She never thought of him that way, in a way or another he always seemed to be the strongest man on earth. Even though his life was full of pain and difficulties, he always managed to go forward and never get stopped. His dreams and his search for the truth was always going on, no matter what. She had witnessed more than once how his strong mind could survive pain and trouble. Specially during that incident with Modell. If it hadn't been for his strong resolution they would be both dead. He could think whatever he wanted, but she knew how determined and strong he was. "Just a little. I haven't been sleeping very well lately. My mother seems to be concerned about leaving the house." Scully said sincerely. "She wants to sell it? I thought she didn't want to leave it." Mulder commented. "Yes, I thought so too, but apparently she hasn't been feeling very safe in the house lately. She started hearing noises around the backyard. I think someone might be trying to break in." "Really? You should have told Skinner. I am sure he could have arranged a little surveillance." Mulder suggested. "I didn't want my mother to go through that. She is very suspicious of everyone after my sister got killed. I think it would be better if she went to live somewhere else." Mulder turned to look at Scully's expression. "You are not serious? What about you? Your mother is the only thing that makes you go. If she left to go to Florida to retire you would have no release valve." Scully smiled at her partner with a little uncertainty. "Well, then I guess I'll just have to find someone else to bother with my problems." Mulder smiled back. "We're almost there. I can see the towers already." He said getting closer to the windshield to look out. Scully squinted in the darkness of the afternoon and finally could distinguish the shape of five towers. The gate could only be seen a few miles after, and the whole building was then in sight. It was strangely rectangular and it had a very precise set of dimensions as if it had been built that way and nothing had ever been added or remodeled. "This place must be really old." Scully noticed. "Looks like we are going to have fun." Mulder drove to the gate and pulled out his ID to show the guard. "I'm Special Agent Fox Mulder and this is my associate Special Agent Dana Scully, we have an appointment with Mr. Kim." Mulder announced to the guard in a clear voice. "Yes, I have your names down here in my list . . ." The guard took a pause and lifted his head up, "I'm afraid your partner will not be let in. This is a very strange place and anything can happen at any moment. Mr. Kim asked me to tell you that it would be best for the lady to wait outside. We've had an accident today and there's a lot of chaos in there." Mulder turned to look at Scully with an apologetic smile. "Scully? Is that OK with you?" Mulder asked carefully and waiting for her to explode at him for having asked. "Yeah, I guess. If they are having trouble with the convicts the last thing they need is a woman walking around and causing havoc among those people." Scully explained with a very annoyed face. Mulder for a long moment kept his eyes on her to make sure she was all right with that idea, and saw that she wasn't perfectly comfortable. He was guessing she was about to kill someone and barely held her urge back.At that point Mulder turned back to the guard and stuck his head out of the window. "That's fine. Can you tell me where to go?" Mulder asked before pulling in the gated community and driving to the main entrance. Scully got out of the car and followed him inside. The guard that came to welcome them showed them a room where she would be waiting. Mulderonce again stared at her to see if she was all right and she smiled at him. "Mulder, I am fine. I'll be waiting here. I don't feel like causing more trouble. You know how these primates act when they see a woman." Mulder smiled and stepped closer to her. "You should see me at home alone every week end." He whispered before leaving his partner with a cute surprised smile on her little face. The guard that had guided them in was now showing Mulder the way to Mr. Kim's office. Scully sat down in a wooden chair and waited for more than two hours for Mulder to come back. When she finally saw him coming the prison director was with him. "I am really sorry we had to ask you to wait here Agent Scully, but we had a pretty tough day and we are still trying to keep the convicts calm." Said the director extending his hand to be shaken. "I am Frank Kim, the director of this prison." Scully who was already standing up, shook his hand politely and introduced herself. "There's no need to apologize, I'm a Special Agent I know what it is like when convicts get nervous." Scully reassured the director. "As I was saying to your partner, after what happened a week ago we are experiencing a lot of difficulties here. The convicts are restless and seem to see ghosts everywhere. A group of five people has been found dead hanging in the showers." Said the director then. Mulder cut in explaining the part missing. "It seems that Jack Connors had a lot of enemies and swore to get revenge after freeing himself from the chair." Scully looked puzzled but didn't inquire until they were back in the car driving to the little town they had left their luggage at. "Has anyone seen him yet?" She asked at one point. "No. But he didn't have any friends in the prison, which makes me think if someone had seen him they would probably just try to get rid of him." Scully thought back to the case of that voodoo convict who had mysteriously come back to life to get revenge on the people he hated. This seemed so much the same thing. "Do you think he could have survived in the desert if no one was there to help him escape?" She asked then. "No, probably not. No cars were stolen that day either." Mulder added. She looked again through the papers of the X-File. Was there anything that could help their chase? "Mulder, this certificate states that Connors had a daughter that he tried to kill when she was 5. Wasn't that the case of that black market adoption case that we saw a few months ago?" Mulder turned to look at his partner. "Maggie Connors, the little girl that the neighbors found almost dead in that apartment in Greenwich Village. She got adopted after the bureauchanged her name and identity." "Do you think Connors could be looking for Maggie? May be he knew she wasn't dead." "That is a disturbing idea." Mulder commented sincerely. Scully had already picked up the cellular phone to call the bureau. She talked to Skinner, still working in his office and left him with the duty of checking up on that matter as soon as possible. "This still doesn't explain how someone can escape the electric chair in front of a public and make it though the desert without a car." Mulder said after Scully hung up with Skinner. "May be he did have help. What if in some way Jack Connors was like Modell? He could have made those people think that something incredible was going on but in reality he was just making them see a dream. What if he got a guard or a member of the audience to help him out of there?" Scully attempted. "It sounds scientifical enough except the Modell part. You can do better than that Scully." Her partner said sarcastically. "Mulder, I am being serious. I never said that Modell didn't have any powers. I just said that the products he was buying were helping him develop an incredible mind suggestion technique. That is still scientifical data." Mulder smiled distractedly. "This time I have to say, I hope you are wrong. I don't think I can handle another mind struggle with someone like Modell." Mulder whispered concerned. Now, was that the time to tell him how well he had reacted? "Mulder, you did more than you think. Modell would have crushed anyone else. You were really in control. You did come out of it." "Other than the fact that the guy was about to die and probably just let me go, I don't think I was in control. If I hadn't heard your voice and without your distraction, now we would be history." Scully looked at Mulder and noticed now that his jaw was tightened. "We are not. We are the good guys, remember?" He smiled faintly and she went back to reading the X-File in her lap. When the rolling of the car stopped, Scully woke up to find herself back at the hotel. It was almost 2am and she needed to sleep really bad. "Wake up sleeping beauty, we are back at the castle." Mulder joked turning off the engine. Scully lifted her head up and bent over to pick up the papers of the file that now lay on the floor of the car. "If this is your concept of a castle I am not sure I would want to date you, Mulder." She said sarcastically giving a look at the decrepit hotel that they were staying at. "What? I thought you would comment on the fact that I called you a beauty." Mulder replied with a grin. Scully threw a look back at him and got out of the car. They both walked to their rooms and in front of hers they both stopped to decide the next move. She handed him the file and the briefcase. "You are probably going to need this, I have already looked it over." Scully said opening her door and throwing in her purse. "So what do you suggest to do?" She asked him. Mulder put down the file that he was already looking through and stared at her. "Fly to Plantation, where the little girl is living and asking around some questions, I guess." "Do you think Connors could be already that far? How would he find information on his daughter without help from the FBI?" "I don't know, but we are not here to explain why. We are here to stop him." She nodded distractedly and walked in her room. "I'll wake you up tomorrow morning when it's time to live." Mulder said before disappearing to his room. Two days later they were both back to Washington. Plantation had resulted to be the wrong lead when more in mates were murdered at the federal prison. Skinner was finally discussing the matter with them trying to figure out what they were thinking and Mulder seemed to be extremely distant the whole time. It felt like his mind was strangely analyzing problems of his own. When the meeting was over and they headed back to their office in the basement, she closed the door and went to his desk where he was already sitting. "Mulder? Is something in your head?" Scully asked him worried. When he looked like this, it was usually a bad sign. "I can't stop thinking that the guy might have tried to escape just to get revenge over the prisoners. He is probably still hiding in that prison, or may be just controlling someone and making him do the job." Mulder lifted his head up. "Just pretend he was another Modell. . .Wouldn't he need to be around to make people execute his wish?" Scully shrugged. "Yes, but we haven't found anyone in that federal prison who had seen him. He couldn't possibly be controlling the whole cell block. Even Modell with his pharmaceuticals had his limits." He stood up and started pacing the room. "What if he's hiding with someone? Just one person. May be he kept a man under his control and he is now hiding around him so that he can make him do his dirty job." "Mulder, no one but the director could access the pr . . ." Mulder turned quickly to look at her. She jumped out of the room and went directly to the car. Mulder sat down at the driver's seat and they drove off like maniacs. Scully pulled out her phone and dialed up the airport immediately. This time she was requiring the help of the FBI air force to meet them at the airport and fly them to the federal prison with some back up forces. When they pulled in the airport Mulder parked quickly and they both ran through the terminal to the gate at which their airplane was waiting. They finally got inside and summoned the pilot to leave as soon as possible with high priority. In a matter of few minutes they were flying back to the federal prison. Scully carefully checked her holster for her gun and started checking her ammo. "Worried Scully?" He asked from the other side of the plane where he was sitting talking to some of the agents going with them. "Just a matter of precaution." She said shortly, trying not to revealthe questions that were going through her mind. Scully couldn't stop thinking of what happened with Modell. She wasn't going to get involved in a chase with no protection whatsoever for her partner. The last time he almost blew his head off and pointed a gun to her. He kept on telling her that she saved him, that she was the real hero of the case.So why was she feeling like he always fought his wars alone? There was always a hanging sensation that he was going to run off and take care of things his way just to keep her out of trouble. She knew he was wrong, of course he had to be. She saved his life more than once and she was his equal partner in the X-Files. But Mulder did have the tendency to overact like her older brother and protect her from everything. Now it was time to react and face reality. Scully wasn't going to back up on this one, but she was certainly going to try to be ready for it. Mulder stood up from his seat and walked to where she was. Scully looked up and he sat down next to her. "I think we might be able to get to something if we are not too late. After all even a man like Connors only has a limited amount of enemies." She looked at him with a questioning look. "You mean he'll have to stop when there is no one else left that he wants to kill?" "How many people could he be having problems with? Cell mates, some guards, a few people that tried to be fresh with him in the showers. . ." She made a sad smile. "Well, I guess he already took care of the 'freshy' people." She joked remembering the group of people found dead hanging in the showers. They both talked about the case and how to break it to Mr. Kim. They decided that a simple visit at his residence was probably better than just tell him there could be something wrong with him. They should have thought about it immediately. No one could have left the prison without a car or help from someone. In this case Connors had probably talked Mr. Kim into rescuing him from the chair and then hiding him in his house until all the enemies were exterminated. LAST WARNING FOR SCULLY AND MULDER ROMANCE SITUATION!!!!! Fear of Losing You (2/3) The airplane landed in the desert and the support team took a car out of a C-117 to drive them to the prison housing. They arrived at the director's house before dark and they went in after finding out that the door had been left open. Scully walked slowly and silently to the bedroom and Mulder searched the kitchen. "Mulder!" Called Scully from the bedroom. Mulder ran in with his gun pointed in the air and found her in the closet kneeling down. "Scully, you OK?" He asked immediately before kneeling down himself. "It's Mr. Kim." She said looking back at him. He made a face and let his head down on his chest. "How can you tell?" He managed to say sarcastically before standing up and letting the rest of the team in to take the body away. Scully put the gun back in her holster and he did the same. They walked out in the yard and ordered the team to search the whole house from top to bottom. Scully walked to the garage and looked inside for the director's car. "Mulder?" Scully called once again. He walked to her and stepped next to her. "The car is still here. He can't be far." She told Mulder. He looked around as if to direct himself and then summoned her to follow him to the car. They drove around for a while before going back to the prison. The guard at the front gate told them that a laundry truck was missing from the day before. They both drove away with that news and headed for the nearest town. Scully once again called up the team back at the director's house and told them to meet them in town. "Do you think he might still be there?" Scully asked. "I don't know, it seems like he knows what we are doing." Yes. She had had the same feeling. He had probably seen them that day at the prison through the director's mind and may be now he really knew about his daughter. "He might be going for his daughter next. If he saw us at the prison or scanned us through the director's mind, then he knows." Scully told Mulder. "Yeah, I thought of that myself." He drove like a maniac for all the miles separating them to the town and when they finally got there it was deep dark and it was pouring. They both got out of the car and went inside the police office to ask some information. Scully walked behind Mulder trying to get her trench coat to dry up in those few seconds that they were inside the office. Mulder walked directly to the desk and asked the officer in charge if they had seen any laundry trucks coming from the federal prison in town. The officer looked back to the sergeant sitting at another desk. She stood up and walked to the counter to see them. "I saw it today. It was at the Aladdin Inn. I asked the owner if they knew who was driving it but he said that no new customers had checked in." Mulder looked at Scully and she came forward. "Did you notice anything strange? Did he seem to be his normal self?" Scullyinquired nervously. The sergeant shook her shoulders. "Yeah, I guess so." Scully and Mulder thanked them both and then walked to the exit. "Agent Mulder?" Called the sergeant. They both turned around. "Now that you mentioned it, I remember something strange. The coffee machine was on. In fact Mr. Wilbur offered me a cup. Mr. Wilbur doesn't drink coffee and he never has that machine working in the afternoon. It's a little Inn and they try to save on some food and electricity." Mulder thanked again and they both ran out in the rain to the car. He drove silently to the Inn and when they finally got there he parked near the curb of the block before. It was just a matter of precaution. They walked under the rain and they entered the Inn when the owner was about to close it up for the night. "Excuse me sir?" Began Mulder trying to get the little man to step back and let him in. "We are closed for tonight. There are no more rooms." The man said hurriedly. Mulder gave a look to Scully who was already pulling out her gun ready to shoot. They walked in pushing the man aside and they both showed their ID. Scully walked to the rooms and Mulder looked at the counter. Scully was more than anything looking around for sounds and noises. Connors had to be still around to be able to keep the owner under his control. A door closed almost soundlessly and she walked to it carefully. She put her back to the wall swearing silently for the rain hitting her face and making it almost impossible for her to see anything. She paced herself and walked a few steps before getting ready to kick down the door of the room. A huge man came out running knocking her off her feet and pushing her to the curb. She hit her head badly but found enough breath to call out for her partner. "Mulder!" He came out running splashing water all over the place with his feet and saw the figure running by. He ran to her first to check on her health seeing that she was bleeding from the head. "I'm fine, go get him!" Scully screamed before he even reached her. He turned around and ran behind the guy in the heavy rain of the night. She pulled herself up knowing that this had to be done together. She found her balance and started walking to where they had disappeared. The sounds of the night were all covered up by the pounding sound of the drops of rain hitting the ground. She listened hard for a hint on what path to follow and only when she heard voices she finally knew where to go. Her face peered carefully from a corner and she saw Mulder standing in the middle of the street looking around for clues. A second after the other man shot out of his hiding place and Mulder started running after him again. Scully came out of her hiding corner and ran behind the two men. Of course she couldn't risk the guy noticing her presence, he was so busy distracting Mulder that she probably was still invisible to his scrutinizing mind. Mulder came to a stop and the guy now was talking to him. From where she was she couldn't hear what was going on but she knew she had to get closer. She wouldn't risk Mulder being ordered to shoot himself without doing anything. Not this time she wouldn't. "I know of your past, Agent Fox Mulder." The maniac was now saying. "I know what you did in that hospital . . . very impressing . . . But can you resist my inner voice? All the people I killed back there in the prison thought I was an idiot . . . they thought they knew who they were against. . . They were wrong." "Why didn't you try to escape before then?" Mulder asked. Great, that was a sign that he wasn't under his spell yet. "I needed time to build up my strength, but now . . . well, now I am ready to get my revenge." Scully looked from behind some peach crates that were stored in the back of what looked like a restaurant. She could see both men from her position. Mulder on the right and Connors on the left. Connors was starting to speak again and moving forward to get Murder's gun. A peach crate on her left fell down and Connors ran away once again. This time she followed Connors without letting her judgment get influenced by protecting Mulder. She ran to her closest side to reach Connors from the front and Mulder simply followed him the way he had done before. When she turned to the street she had to chase Connors in a very dark alley that she figured might as well be dead ended. The sound of a police car coming was in some way reassuring but losing sight of the killer wasn't at all. Mulder ran to her and both looked at each other in complete disbelief. "Did you see where he was heading?" Asked Mulder now starting to breathe heavily. "No, I was hoping you knew." Scully said back uncertain. "Damn." Mulder swore right before they heard a shot. Both agents ran to the shot from different directions so that they could intercept the criminal on two sides. Scully was intercepting the guy from his left and Mulder was still tracking him down from behind. When he finally caught a sight of him he saw the gun in his hand and the police officer dead a few block away explained where he had gotten it. He carefully tried to reach Connors from the street he was in and suddenly he heard Scully run in. The moment he saw her coming in the alley where Connors was, he knew it was the worst time she could have chosen. In a split second he realized that she couldn't know he had stolen the gun from the dead officer because she had not seen the dead officer from where she was coming. Panic came over him for the first time that they worked together. He ran in the alley to distract Connors at the time that Scully was calling him up and telling him to stop. The time seemed to freeze. He felt himself move as slow as a turtle and the possibilities of what was happening passed through his eyes in a flash. He stopped in the middle of the street with his gun pointed at Connors and simply looked at Scully coming to her death. "Scully!!! He's got a gun!!!" Mulder screamed at the top of his lungs. Scully froze in the street in time to dive to the ground. She heard the shot and she lifted her head up from the mud to react. Connors was now looking at her with a smug smile. Her eyes followed the path to where Mulder had been standing. He was down. My God, he was down! She turned to look at the guy now pacing to her, he had the gun in his hand waving with his arm to his side. She showed her teeth to the guy right before from his lower hand she pulled out her loaded gun and shot the guy right in the middle of his face. The body got hit by the bullet at full speed and thrown backwards a few feet before finally falling down in a thunder. Scully stood up quickly and ran to her partner now lying in a puddle of water. "Mulder? Mulder?" She called knowing it was useless. She touched him looking for the wound and when her hand touched his forehead she noticed the blood streaming down his neck. Carefully she searched his head and felt the bullet hole on the left side of his temple. "Oh, my God!" Scully pulled out her telephone and dialed the number with the most shaky hands she had even had. "This is Special Agent Scully, my partner is down. We need an ambulance immediately at the corner of Madison and Granger. Special head wound care." She finally managed to say in the phone. She hung up and threw the phone on the floor to go back to checking her partner's condition. She passed her hand on his face to protect it from the rain. "Mulder? Mulder, hold on. I won't let you die." She whispered letting her tears get washed away by the rain. He opened his eyes for a moment. It was the calm before the storm and she knew it very well. He was ready to go in a coma. "Scully?" Mulder whispered in a barely audible voice. "Mulder . . . Don't worry I'll make sure you get better." "Are you . . . all right?" Mulder managed to ask. She held his head in her lap and covered his face from the rain with her body. "I am just fine. Everything is over. The ambulance is coming." Scully said right before hearing the ambulance arriving. Mulder smiled faintly at her and raised his hand to her face. Scully felt the faint pressure of his hand on her cheek, and then it was over. His hand fell right back down and his eyes closed. The ambulance pulled in and she screamed at the people to hurry up. They ran to them quickly and carefully loaded him up on a stretcher. She followed them in the ambulance after picking up her portable phone. She sat down in the little bench inside the ambulance watching the nurses take care of him. The ride to the hospital was very short and after they arrived they ran through the corridors like crazy to get him to the operating room before it was too late. She stayed behind when they took him in the operating room. She couldn't think of what to do, her head and thoughts, were all messed up from what had just happened. Only then she realized how much she depended on him. Just knowing that he wasn't going to be around to help her though this terrible moment of pain in her life, was enough to make her scream. She sat down in a chair trying to organize her thoughts and finally decided to call up Skinner and let him know what happened. "Are you all right Agent Scully?" Asked the AD obviously worried to death for her. "Yes, sir. I am perfectly fine. I am waiting for someone to come out of that room to let me know something." "Agent Scully, I want you to call me back up when you know something. I am going to leave Washington as soon as possible. I'll be there tomorrow at the latest." "Yes, sir." Scully agreed before hanging up. She left the phone booth and went back to the chair in front of the operating room. What if he wasn't going to wake up? What if he had saved her life losing his? How was she going to live with herself knowing that she should have been more careful, and that if she had been now her partner wouldn't be dying? She massaged her forehead slowly and lifted her head up when she heard people coming out of the room. A doctor walked to her slowly. Her somber face didn't promise much, but Scully kept on praying that it wasn't too late. She jumped up and stepped in front of the doctor. "I am doctor Susan Lem. Your partner is not coming out of it very well. He suffered a severe concussion and we are still checking for brain damage. Luckily the bullet exited his skull without even getting close to any dangerous sections of the brain. There isn't much we can do right now, he slipped in a coma in his way here and we weren't able to bring him back. We are hoping he'll make it through the night." The doctor said sincerely to Scully. "I'd like to stay with him. I am a medical doctor with the FBI, and I would feel better if I could keep an eye on him during the night." Scully told doctor Lem open heartedly. The doctor smiled gently and nodded to her. "That will be fine. . . Also, I am not here to tell you that we have enough facilities to take care of him, so you might want to look around and schedule a transfer as soon as things develop." "Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks for your help." Scully said before following the stretcher with Mulder to his room. The nurses set him up with a lot of machinery and then simply checked a table at the foot of the bed. Scully waited for them to exit the room and then she pulled her chair next to his bed. He was connected to a respiratory machine that went with a tube right down his throat, and to several machines that were recording his vital signs. His eyes were closed shut as if he were already dead and they were both circled by blood and bruises. She leaned over to check his tube and then started looking around for all the other little conduits. She wasn't going to let a stupid imperfection in a plastic tube take her partner's life away. It took her at least two hours to calm down her conscience that the machines were working and he was getting enough oxygen. She finally sat down in her chair and put her head against the bars of his bed. "You can't leave me now, Mulder. You are the only friend I have." Scully whispered before falling asleep on him. Scully woke up suddenly when the AD's voice was calling her. She opened her eyes and saw Skinner on the other side of the bed looking at her red head sleeping on Fox Mulder's arm. She stood up brushing away the sleepiness in her eyes and faced the AD. "I am sorry, I should have called you. I completely forgot." She admitted ashamed. "It's absolutely understandable, agent Scully." Skinner said walking around the bed to get to her. "You need to rest in a real bed. He'll be all right. It's a hospital not a farm." Scully looked at the AD ashamed to have to say what she was going to say. "I'd rather stay here, sir." Skinner gave a strange look. "Agent Scully, your partner is in good hands. I'll be checking on him too. I promise I'll call you up if anything happens." He assured her. Scully was already shaking her head before he finished his sentence. "Sir, it's really important to me. He saved my life, I can't just go. I need to stay here. I know he needs me to stay here." Scully managed to say. Skinner was about to say something else but simply shut up. Scully understoodthat that was all the sympathy she was going to get from him. "Thank you, sir." Scully said sincerely to a silent AD. Skinner nodded distractedly and exited the room to go talk to a doctor. After two days Mulder was transported back to Washington to a federal hospital in one of the best units for head wounds. Scully followed patiently and no matter what anyone said, she wasn't going to stay away from him even for one second. Skinner was worried for her job and her mental health, but somehow he seemed to understand that her job was nothing compared to this. One day Skinner called her in his office and was forced to send three agents to take her in. When she finally entered his office he made her sit down. She sat down on a chair uncomfortably and the AD started looking at her in search for answers. "Agent Scully, I am at a point that I need to ask you what you want to do about your job." The AD started nervously. "About my job?" Scully repeated. "Yes. Are you willing to come back to work or should I consider this as your departure from the bureau?" Scully moved uncertain in her chair. "Is there a chance I could take my vacation days now, Sir?" Skinner smiled softly and then took off his glasses before rubbing his eyes. He lifted his head up once again and looked directly in her eyes. She could tell he was worried, and in some way he also knew that she was going through a very bad moment in her life. "Agent Scully, I know how you are feeling. It is very hard to accept the loss of a partner, but as your supervisor I have to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. . . This is not a day situation. Agent Mulder could be in a coma for years. Are you willing to take that chance?" Scully shifted her gaze away. She didn't need any of that now. She wanted her partner to be better and come back hunt with her. "I can't leave him alone, sir." Scully answered sincerely looking at him. Skinner closed his eyes for a moment and leaned back on his chair. His hand was nervously playing with a pen. "Agent Scully I am going to relieve you from the service until further notice. I couldn't have you back in your condition. I want you to take care of yourself and let me know of any progress. I'll reconsider your situation when you decide it is time." Scully couldn't have hoped for a better choice. She stood up now relieved and thanked her boss before leaving the room quickly to go back to the hospital. LAST WARNING FOR SCULLY AND MULDER ROMANCE SITUATION!!!!! Fear of Losing You (3/3) A month had passed after the accident and Mulder was still in a coma. His head injury was a lot better and his brain seemed to not have sustained any permanent damage. He was still lying in that bed with the stupid respirator down his throat. Scully spent all her time with him and only allowed herself thirty minutes everyday to take a shower and change outfit. She used to eat just outside his room so that she could be around in case of emergency. She was being so paranoid that it scared her too. She had never felt so crazy about an accident. Mulder had been in hospitals a lot and she never felt this way before. Now everything seemed to be of no importance to her, except him. She could never leave the hospital without him; she wouldn't. Her energies were all being spent reading him stupid articles from the Enquirer. He should have known she was around and ready for everything if she was willing to try the Enquirer on him. The nurse checked Mulder's pulse and then changed his IV before exiting the room. Scully dragged her chair back to his side and pulled out her hand to hold his. She just looked at him for long moments in the silence of the room. The only sound was the 'woosh- woosh' of the respirator and the low beep of the cardiogram and encephalogram. She had been staying with him every day and she wasn't going to leave just because people were starting to talk. "And the bat boy has been seen running away from police officers and guards the day after . . ." She was reading him from a magazine in her hand. Suddenly her other hand got squeezed gently. Scully threw away the magazine and stared at the figure laying still in the white bed. Mulder's eyes were opening slowly and he started to choke on that respiratory tube. Scully jumped up and pulled the emergency cord on the side of his bed right before getting to his side to help him detach from the tube. The nurses came in and just added up their help to remove the conduit from his throat. Scully stepped back when the doctor arrived and realized that Mulder wasn't going to let go of her hand. The doctor stepped next to her and looked at her as if to burn her with a glance. Scully simply gestured to Mulder's hand that was now white in the effort to keep her from leaving. The doctor simply took note of that and found another way around the bed. Scully held on to her partner's hand and squeezed it from time to time to let him know she was there for him. She observed the doctor and the nurses around Mulder and when the respiratory machinery was finally gone, Mulder whispered. "Scully . . . Scully . . ." He was in pain, but wanted her to know she was her first priority. She moved next to the bed that on her side was clear from nurses and doctors, and leaned over to him. "I am here, Mulder. I have always been here." She said gently, afraid her voice might hurt him. "Scully . . . you're all right." He said now. His eyes were closing again. The doctor showed her the syringe before putting it away. "Yes. I am fine. Relax, you need to rest." She added before Mulder finally fell asleep. She turned to the doctor that was now gesturing the nurses to get out. "Is he all right?" Scully asked the doctor anxiously. "Yes, he's fine. He needs a lot of rest now. He'll need a little rehabilitation because he's been in a coma for so long, but it looks like he'll be back on duty soon." Scully let her breath go and collapsed in her chair. The doctor stepped next to her and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You need some rest too, you know? I suggest you go home." "No, thanks. I need to be here now." The doctor looked at her hand still locked in Mulder's and smiled. "You took good care of him. Coma patients come out of it sooner if they have a family member next to them." Scully didn't reply to that. She had told Skinner not to worry Mulder's mother telling her what happened, specially not after having been in the hospital herself a few weeks before after the accident with Cancerman. She felt a little guilty for taking away the duty of comforting her son. She wanted this, she needed this. She couldn't think of anyone else next to him when he needed it. She was his partner, that was her place. Scully opened her eyes slowly when she felt her hair caressed. Her head pulled up slowly from the bed and her eyes met Mulder's. "Mulder? Are you OK?" She asked trying to look professional like he knew her. "Like my usual self. I've had time to notice you brought some heavy literature with you, Scully." He joked pointing at the Enquirer. Scully broke a little smile. "I thought it might help you. I thought if I gave you one more reason to come back, you would snap out of it sooner." Scully moved in her chair and was now standing up to get closer to Mulder's side. Mulder smiled and brought his eyes back to her face. "You should have told me you were here waiting for me then." Scully locked up her jaw trying to hide her tension and feelings. "I'll remember it next time." She finally answered in a very cold and professional voice. Mulder looked at her clothes and then at the rest of the room. "I noticed you have a lot of your things here. How much time did you waste in this room?" He asked looking back at her. Waste? What waste? He spent twice as much at her side after she hadbeen returned by her abductors. Mulder had visited her and stayed at her side patiently waiting for her to wake up. It had been his faith in her to bringher back and give her the strength to face the horror of the memories. . .Memories that she could only see in bits and disappeared as soon as she was close to seeing beyond the facade. "I didn't waste any time. I couldn't go back to work. I am momentarily suspended." He furrowed his eyebrows in that cute posture of his. "Skinner got you fired?" "No. He just let me have a long vacation." "How long was I gone?" "Just a month." Mulder half closed his eyes a long instant. "What happened to Connors?" He asked opening his eyes up. "Dead." His gray laser eyes now scanned Scully's in search of . . .what? The truth? Scully spoke up before he could ask for any explanation. She knew that's what he was looking for now. He didn't like to be left behind. "After he shot you, he came for me and I pulled the trigger." It wasn't exactly what had happened, but he didn't need to know that seeing him down blinded her judgment to the point of shooting a man before giving him a chance to surrender. "Thanks for watching over me. I owe you dinner. . . a month of dinners." He joked again. It was great to have him back. His sense of humor was what she needed now. Scully laughed silently. "Yeah, with your paycheck and your taste in castles I couldn't possibly accept." She said shooting back her joke. "Ouch! I'll have to let you take me out and then pay the check." She smiled once again to her partner. His dark haired head was laying on that white hospital pillow and his pale lips were finally moving to form the words she waited so long to hear. Scully was happy once again, how come she never noticed it before? She had always thought her life was poor and certainly not happy. Did that accident change her view on life? "You need to rest now. If the doctor knew that I was harassing you, he would kick me out." Mulder's deep eyes now froze in hers. "I would never let go of your hand, Scully. They couldn't drag you away if they tear my arm off." Scully stared at him in silence not knowing what to say. The sound of something being dropped in the corridor outside made her snap out of it. "I think it's time for me to go." She finally gained control of her speech. "Can I take you out to dinner then?" Mulder asked with his sweet smile and his puppy eyes. Scully picked up her stuff from the chairs and floor and looked back at him. "We'll talk about it when you have less drugs in your system." She joked. "Scully . . . you afraid of catching something with the goodnight kiss?" Mulder whispered with his funny look on. Scully gave him a look and he smiled casually. She gave him a pat on the arm and leaned over to give him an unusual good day kiss on the cheek. "I'll be home if you need me." She said before stepping out of the room. Scully got her life back together and asked Skinner to be reevaluated for the position in the X-Files. Skinner told her he would analyze the situation and communicate her the final decision. She knew something was not sounding right but it was no time to recriminate on the past. She had decided to stay with Mulder at the hospital because she couldn't imagine herself going back to work if he was not there. She had chosen her only way out at the moment. When Mulder finally got released by the hospital she was there to pick him up. She had brought some clothes for him from his place and was ready to drive him back. When he saw her coming in, he jumped off the bed. "Scully. I was wondering how long it would take you. Still watching out for speed limit signs?" Scully threw him a bad look and handed him his clothes. "All right Mulder. That's your stuff, let's see you put it on." She said in a challenge crossing her arms on her curvy chest. Mulder made a face and sat back down on the bed. "OK, you got me there." He admitted. She smiled happily and stepped out of the room to let him change. When the door opened he appeared all dressed up, his usual self. She fought hard not to cry and scream. She was so happy to see him back the way he was. And . . . she knew she couldn't stay with the X-Files any more. If anything like that ever happened again she wouldn't have been able to handle it. She couldn't simply go through something like this and wait until it was over. What if he died? What if she was to stay alone in that basement office of theirs? No, it had to stop there. Her feelings were growing too strong for her to handle. "It feels good to be back up." Mulder said following her through the corridors of the hospital to get out. Scully was strangely quiet and he knew something was really bothering her. He had the feeling he knew what she needed, but he didn't have the guts to ask her. He knew perfectly well he wouldn't like what she had to say. No, he would be a coward and just keep quiet until she would have to say it by herself. They finally got in the car and she sat at the wheel ready to drive. Could he? Could he just stay there and witness the pain in her eyes? He reached for her hand and took her car keys away. Scully turned around to look at her partner with a questioning look. "Something's wrong, Mulder?" "I don't know. You tell me." He said putting the keys in his pocket. Scully furrowed her eyebrows in that posture that was her way to ask 'what'. "What do you mean?" She said confirming her look. "I mean something is going on in your mind but you are afraid of telling me." Mulder was hard to fool. She should have known better. Scully simply closed her eyes for a moment and then lifted her head back up. "OK, Mulder. I do have something to discuss with you, but I think this is not the right place to do that. Let's just drop you off at home and talk tomorrow." He shook his head no. "No. Let's just drop me off and you come in to talk." Scully looked at him for an instant and then sighed. "Fine. We'll talk at your place." He gave her back the keys and tried to entertain her with some riddles on the Enquirer's articles she had left with him in the hospital. She didn't feel much like joking but his good sense of humor made her feel better. He knew something big was in her mind and probably she hadn't talked to anyone because he wasn't there to talk to. She always used to ask his opinion and have his point of view on things. My God, did they depend so much on each other? She must have felt destroyed during the time he was in the hospital. Scully parked the car carefully in front of his apartment and helped him with the magazines and the little belongings he had with him. They entered his apartment and she put his stuff on a chair in the living room. "Thanks for helping." Mulder said going to the kitchen for a glass of water. Scully followed her partner in there and leaned over a counter. Mulder gave her a look from inside the fridge. "Would you like something to drink?" "No, thanks. I'm fine." Mulder straightened himself up and curved his lips in a shy smile. "Sorry for the mess in here. I haven't been around to clean up." He finally said in an embarrassed tone of voice. Scully shifted her gaze away with a frown on her face. "It's never been your concern, Mulder. Don't try to find excuses." She joked then. Mulder laughed inaudibly and simply drank his water before putting the glass in the sink. Some more mess to clean up wasn't going to matter with the apartment in that condition. "Do you want to talk in the kitchen or the living room is much more appropriate?" He asked then hoping that her talk didn't require a suit and a tie. "Here is fine." She approved. Mulder sat down in a chair and waited for her to uncross her arms and start talking. "Should I ask you questions, Scully?" He tried then to break the ice, noticing that she wasn't going to start voluntarily. Scully lifted her head up and moved to sit in a chair next to him. "You know in this month I've had a lot to think about. . . my life, my job, my family . . ." She paused for a moment to look at him. "I don't think I want to continue with the X-Files. I think it's time for me to think of myself. . . as a medical doctor may be." He furrowed his eyebrows now. "You want to leave the bureau or just me?" Right at the point. Scully passed nervous hands on her face. "I'll be honest with you Mulder . . ." Her eyes were now staring frozen in his. "I can't handle another situation like the one that just happened." "The case or me?" She sighed impatiently now, her eyes shifting away from him. Mulder stretched his arm out and took her chin in his hand to make her look at him once again. "It's me, isn't it? You're afraid I'll let go." She stared at him silently for one moment then shook her head. "No, that's not it." "Then, what is it?" Mulder was now confused, but she could tell he was worried and may be . . . May be a little scared too. Scully's head was now pointing down at the floor. She raised it to him and tried a smile that didn't come out quite well. "What happened . . . you know that night when Connors . . ." She stood up and stepped away from him. She couldn't sit too close without remembering the pain. Scully's hands rested on the counter next to the sink. She needed a support so that her hands would stop shaking. Great, her hands now stopped and her eyes were letting go. She held back her strength and directed it to her tears. It wasn't the right moment to show weakness. "That night you got me really scared. . . I lost my judgment. . . and I shot that man even before he pointed the gun at me. I was out of my mind, I couldn't even reason anymore. The only thing I could think of was that you were down in the street and this maniac had done it to you." She paused for a second to gain control of her tears once again. "I stayed every moment next to your bed at the hospital. I just couldn't let go. I was afraid if I went home you would disappear in the night and I would think it was just a dream. Spooky Mulder's reputation, you know. You would just be a ghost." She finally turned around and her red cheeks and shiny eyes told him more than she wanted him to know. "I can't let you go Mulder. Knowing that you are not around me any more would kill me. I really think I should take leave from the bureau and find something else to do. You know . . . try to get over this trauma." Mulder was silent now. He was shocked. He didn't expect this. Of course he knew they were a team but he didn't know they were so close. How would he feel if she was the one in that bed in a coma? Would he be able to deal with it? How did he feel when she was in that situation some months before? Didn't it feel like someone was trying to tear his heart out from his mouth? Didn't it feel like he could kill just anybody that got too close to her bed side? Mulder stood up and walked to his partner. "I think you should think this over carefully. It's not something you can go back to. Skinner will want your head for it." Scully massaged her reddened face and then looked him straight in the eye. "What do you think of it, Mulder? Your opinion in the subject would help." Mulder sighed silently and moved to a counter to lean on it like she was doing. "My opinion shouldn't matter. It's your life, Dana. Do you want to live with or without certain things?" Was that a hint? What things was he referring to? Would she rather live away from him forever or take her chance with life and death? "There are some things that I can't control." She answered sincerely following his lead on the subject of 'things.' Mulder bent his head sideways and smiled once again. She needed to see him smile to feel some comfort, and feel like the situation wasn't as dramatic as she thought it was. "You aren't that great of an agent after all." He ended up telling her. Scully sighed this time, but didn't take the offense personally. "No, I guess not." She answered instead. Mulder walked to her now quickly. "Hey, I didn't mean that. I meant you are not looking where you are supposed to. All the things you want you could have. It just requires a lot more work to obtain." Scully lifted her head up now getting the hint fully. She didn't dare follow on that thought. She couldn't dream of exposing her feelings, not in a situation as delicate as this one. "I don't think I should be here wishing for it when I could be somewhere else healing from it." She ended up saying wisely. Mulder's eyes were now lost in thought. After a second he stepped in front of her. "Can you heal yourself, Dana, or is it too late?" Now he knew she couldn't run away from the answer. Come and get it, Scully. Scully shifted her gaze away from him. "It was already late the day I stepped in that office." She said aloud, finally exposing herself. Her head went up to look at him. His eyes were still looking for hers. Could it be real? Was he feeling the same? "Great, I thought it was just me. That office is way too small and humid. I hope the doctor at the hospital put it down on my chart that I suffer from severe non-ventilation and advanced decomposition." He joked to make things easier. Scully smiled unwillingly, and he simply took her in his arms. "It's all right. . . We can work this out." He was whispering in her ear while she was trying hard not to cry in front of him. "I need a vacation." She said now fully upset for having to hold back her tears. Mulder hugged her gently and then strongly to make her understand he was there for her. He was back. "Come on. It's all right. I'm sure they'll give us a better office one day when we prove the existence of aliens." He joked again. Scully lifted her head up laughing and frowning at the same time. "Can you think of anything else in a moment like this?" She said exasperated. Mulder smiled and leaned over to her ear. "Yes, I can. Will you let me do it without shooting a bullet through my eyes?" Scully lifted her head up to him to say something more. It was hard to keep him under control and make him stay serious. So she simply let it go,but now getting ready to reply something to him. Even before she could open her mouth, he started talking to her. "I love you, Dana. I'd die for you. . . I'd kill for you . . . but I can't let you go away from me. If you really want to, you can leave the X-Files behind, but don't leave me. I need you in my life. I would be dead if you weren't around." Scully stared blankly at him. Where did all that come from? "Mulder, what are you saying?" "I'm saying I love you. I loved you from that moment you walked in my office all suited up ready to break me down. I loved you from the moment I realized I wasn't going to get my way with you because you had your ideas and mine simply weren't good enough to be accepted. I loved you from the moment I found myself driving with you to an x-file site asking myself if I could prove you my theories were right. And I loved you from the moment I realized I wanted you to believe me because without your support I didn't have any truth to look for. You were my truth . . . You were so logical and perfect that you had to be right. I needed to have your support, your friendship . . ." Scully was stunned. Words she wanted to say were now hiding in her head and weren't going to come out easily. "How long have you felt this way?" She ended up asking, feeling like she was interrogating someone on an X-File. "Probably as long as we've stayed together. . .I found out two months ago when I thought Connors was going to take you away from me forever." Scully took a deep breath. She didn't know how to handle this, she didn'tprepare for this. She was only going to tell him that she needed a break from the X-Files. What happened? When did things get out of her hand? "Considering the situation I don't think I should stick around then." She said. Mulder exasperated took her chin in his hand once again. "Is that all you have to say?" He asked deluded. Scully stared at his loving eyes, so full of life now. What was that she came to say? Did she want to leave? Did she want to go back to her boring life with no Mulder's jokes? How could she not see that he was the center of her entertainment and pleasure. Any time he was around things were always great, even pursuing the case of a cannibalistic society's murders could be fun with him. He always managed to make her feel like work was the best part of everything. That's what they were paid for, so why not enjoy it? Could she just turn her back now? He had made the first move, and he was just doing what she did when she found him laying in the mud after being shot. He didn't want to let go of her. His life wasn't worth living without her. Wasn't that what she felt? "Scully? Is that all you have to tell me?" Mulder repeated, seeing that she had gotten distracted. Scully took a deep breath and raised her red head to him. Now or never. "No . . . I love you too." Mulder bent over and slowly captured her mouth with his. Scully held on to him and fused in his soul. Mulder drove her to the living room and they sat down on the couch, his bed. "We'll need to handle this with Skinner . . . but for now I don't want to let go. Promise you won't go." He told her caressing her hair. Scully kissed his cheek and chin, savoring the smooth and silky skin thatwas newly shaven. She had waited for this so long. She would never let go. "I won't. I'll always be there for you. I can't live without you anymore." Mulder hugged her tight and they simply stayed there for infinite moments, knowing that life could never part them. But one thing for sure would always tie them together, the fear of losing one another.
